Dream Hunt Never Ends

"Dream Hunt Never Ends" documents Masaho Anotani, a contemporary Japanese artist known for his raw, fragmented approach to art. Shot during his 2019 SHDW residency in Melbourne, the film follows Anotani into the Australian Outback with a four-person team, including filmmaker Louis Mitchell and art historian Ken McGregor.

The expedition is both an artistic investigation and a test of persistence—Anotani sets out to catch a fish in the desert, a pursuit that ties into his ongoing exploration of nature and Dreamtime. His work deconstructs and reconstructs reality, breaking down traditional perception through his distinct visual language.

Anotani’s reach extends beyond independent projects. He has collaborated with Louis Vuitton, Dries van Noten, and Marc Jacobs, with a longstanding connection to Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, resulting in global installations and runway integrations. His work has been exhibited at Blum & Poe and Hara Contemporary Art Museum, reinforcing his status as a significant force in contemporary Japanese art.

The film’s atmosphere is further shaped by Mars89, Anotani’s brother and a respected sound designer, whose original soundtrack intensifies the documentary’s immersive quality. His compositions add depth, mirroring Anotani’s layered artistic approach and enhancing the film’s disorienting, fractured perspective.

"Dream Hunt Never Ends" dissects the artistic process of an artist who refuses definition. It captures his engagement with the physical and the cosmic, stripping down conventional perspectives and forcing direct confrontation with his vision. The documentary cements Anotani’s presence in contemporary art and delivers an unfiltered look into his creative and philosophical approach.
