Paradise Lost by USUGROW
The Artistic Vanguard of Tokyo's Underground

"USUGROW, started his artistic career in the early 90s, creating flyers for punk and metal bands. His fusion of traditional Japanese calligraphy with punk iconography quickly distinguished him as the visual identity for Tokyo's underground. USUGROW's work gained international prominence through cultural exchanges between Tokyo's punk and metal scene and their counterparts in Los Angeles and New York. This exposure led to a series of collaborations and a global following, culminating in recognition by notable artist and curator Pushead. A significant milestone in his career was his 2005 collaboration with The Hundreds, featuring a regal skeleton in stylized calligraphy and line-work.

This success expanded USUGROW's art beyond Tokyo's underground into the spotlight of a new, international audience.

USUGROW's calligraphy style, notable for its blend of influences, draws from Venice Beach tags, Chicano-style cholo writing, kanji, and Siddham script. Interactions with influential artists like Chaz Bojórquez and studies in Arabic calligraphy have shaped his exotic lettering style. In order to use his growing notoriety for positive change in his home country, USUGROW established The Shinganists (based on the word "shingan," or "the mind's eye"), a new Japanese art movement comprising artists with roots in metal, punk, hip hop, and tattoos. The Shinganist movement has produced exhibitions, publications, and projects across the world and has been directly responsible for exposing artists such as Mozyskey, Toshikazu Nozaka, Bene, and Jun Kaneko to international audiences. Outside of the movement, Usugrow has been involved in album design, art direction, and merchandise for musicians across genres. His further collaborations with skateboarding and fashion brands have solidified his cult following for monochromatic works.

USUGROW's meticulous craftsmanship is a hallmark of his artistic expression, exemplified by his use of rOtring pens. This tool choice is deliberate, enabling precision and intricacy in his work. Each pen stroke adds depth and texture, producing artwork rich in detail and complexity. His hand-drawn shading technique goes beyond demonstrating technical skill; it delves into deeper themes of identity, mythology, and spiritual exploration, allowing USUGROW to create pieces that are both visually compelling and philosophically significant.

'Paradise Lost,' the inaugural print in USUGROW's latest series, showcases his artistic evolution and thematic depth. With a limited run of only 50 prints, this piece is a collector's item as well as a narrative canvas brimming with themes of loss, transformation, and most importantly, rebellion. The design of 'Paradise Lost,' characterized by an intricate interplay of light and shadow, is infused with symbolic depth. It invites viewers to reflect on the contrasting forces in the fabric of existence, making 'Paradise Lost' a visual masterpiece that offers a profound exploration of existential themes.

USUGROW's art transcends traditional visual aesthetics, telling the story of Tokyo's underground scene through each line, shadow, and symbol.
